Young children across California are drinking less soda and other sugary drinks overall compared with seven years ago, but teenagers appear to be gulping more sports and energy beverages, researchers have found.

A report released today shows that 19 percent of all 2- to 5-year-olds drank at least one sugar-sweetened beverage a day in 2011-2012, a 30 percent drop compared with seven years ago. Among 6- to 11-year-olds, there was a 26 percent drop for the same time period.

The downturn can be attributed to soda sale bans at elementary and middle schools, public health campaigns aimed at parents about sugary drinks, and growing awareness about diabetes and obesity, according to researchers who worked on the “Still Bubbling Over” report.

But researchers also found an 8 percent increase statewide in sugary drink consumption among 12- to 17-year-olds, which they say means public health messages and parents’ warnings are not reaching them.

“Among younger kids, there is a dramatic reduction, which means we are making real progress as parents are learning how unhealthy these sugary drinks are,” said Harold Goldstein, executive director for the California Center For Public Health Advocacy, a nonprofit group that works to fight obesity. The center commissioned the study that was conducted by UCLA’s Center for Health Policy Research.

“When we separated the younger kids from the older kids, quite frankly I was shocked,” Goldstein said “There are 3.4 million kids a day drinking at least one soda. That means a half a billion extra calories are being pumped into the bloodstream of kids every day.
